Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful oxidising biocide, successfully used in many settings for decades. It is the major water treatment agent in the NHS. Not only will it rapidly kill bacteria and viruses, it is also highly effective against tough parasites like Cryptosporidium and Coccidiosis.
Because it is so strongly oxidising, Chlorine Dioxide will not only kill pathogens, it will also
- Kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria
- Clean organic matter from pipes, seals, drinkers and troughs
- Remove biofilm, which allows bacteria to hide from disinfectants
- At lower concentrations, and at a wide pH range
- Not create any harmful by-products – Chlorine will form many by-products that are carcinogens causing cancer
Chlorine Dioxide will break down algae and other materials that can give water a bad taste. Given that it breaks down into safe, odourless and tasteless products, unlike Chlorine and Hydrochloric Acid, Chlorine Dioxide will promote more drinking.
Why Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2)?
ClO2 offers a number of advantages over conventional biocides. Its broad spectrum and rapid reactivity allows it to be applied in many situations at lower dose rates with fewer environmental risks.
What advantages does ClO2 have over Chlorine?
- ClO2 is a more powerful oxidant. It is 2.6 times more powerful than chlorine!
- ClO2 only produces safe breakdown products – Chlorine will create many toxic carcinogens
- ClO2 is active at all pHs, so does not require acidification which will corrode pipes
- ClO2 has been found to be effective against complex organisms, e.g. cysts and protozoa. Chlorine is not
- Chlorine does not remove biofilm. ClO2 does!
